What is “Home Health Care” or “Skilled Care”?
Skilled care is a type of medical care provided by licensed professionals — including nurses, physical/occupational/speech therapists, and home health aides — for the purpose of treating or managing an illness, injury, or medical condition. The care is delivered directly to the patient’s residence, which helps people recover faster while avoiding expensive hospital stays.

Registered nurses for medication management, wound care, IV therapy, post-surgical care, chronic disease management, and patient/family education.
Physical, Occupational & Speech Therapy
Licensed therapists to help you regain strength, mobility, balance, daily-living skills, and speech or swallowing function after illness or injury.
Home Health Aide Services
Personal care, bathing, dressing, mobility, meals, and companionship. We deliver this two ways — through our Paid Family Caregiver Program (so a loved one gets paid to care for you) or by sending one of our trained aides to your home.
How to Qualify for Medicare Home Health
Medicare typically covers home health care when all of the following apply:
- You are under the care of a doctor who orders home health
- You need part-time skilled nursing, physical therapy, speech-language pathology, or continuing occupational therapy
- You are considered “homebound” — meaning leaving home is a major effort
- You are receiving care from a Medicare-certified home health agency (like Advocates)

Common Questions About Skilled Care
Does Medicare really cover home health care?
Yes. If you meet the eligibility criteria, Medicare Part A and/or Part B covers eligible home health services — including skilled nursing, therapy, and home health aide visits — typically at no out-of-pocket cost to the patient.
How fast can care begin after my doctor orders it?
In most cases we can complete an in-home admission visit within 24–48 hours of receiving the physician’s order, and start care the same week. Hospital discharges are prioritized.
How long does a typical episode of care last?
Medicare home health is typically authorized in 60-day episodes. Many patients are discharged sooner once they meet their goals; others continue with re-certification based on ongoing medical need.
What’s the difference between skilled care and personal home care?
Skilled care is licensed medical care (nursing, therapy) usually covered by Medicare. Personal home care is non-medical help with daily living (bathing, meals, companionship) usually covered privately or through Medicaid waivers. We provide both.
